User Services Librarian -- Reference/Instruction

Under general direction of the Head of User Services and the Team Leader for Reference and Instruction Services, the successful candidate will provide research assistance to users at Middle Tennessee State University's (MTSU) Walker Library with an emphasis on serving undergraduate students as part of the MTSU student retention and success initiative. As a member of the Reference and Instruction Team, the candidate will develop and lead general and subject specific library instruction courses to MTSU students in two state of the art electronic classrooms. The successful candidate will develop and/or promote resources and collections designed to meet the information needs of MTSU students and faculty in support of student retention.

This is a 12-month, tenure-track position. All library faculty are expected to meet promotion and tenure standards. Available as soon as position is filled.


  • Provide general and specialized reference service in person, via email, and through reference IM.
  • Participate in other Reference and Instruction programs and projects, such as Research Coach (individual reference appointments).
  • Serve as a subject liaison for developing resources and collections in assigned subject area(s).
  • Teach general library research classes to undergraduate and graduate students using two electronic classrooms. Develop customized supplementary materials as needed for instruction sessions.
  • Within the library, effectively works with a cross department project team in collaboration with the Heads of User Services, Collection Development and Management and Library Technology to plan, implement and manage digital projects, including the underlying technology infrastructure.
  • Serve as a member of the Reference and Instruction Team.
  • Maintain current knowledge of trends in reference and instruction.
  • Cultivate and sustain collaborative relationships with faculty, students, and staff in support of campus teaching, learning, and student success.
  • Participate as embedded librarian in online courses.
  • Participate in professional service and research activities in support of promotion and tenure requirements.

Required Qualifications: ALA accredited Master's degree. Minimum 2 years professional library experience. Ability to work creatively and effectively in a team environment to enhance library programs and services. Extensive knowledge of print and electronic research tools. Demonstrated experience with Library instruction to undergraduate students. Ability to work selected evenings and weekends. Demonstrated commitment to reference and user-centered services. Ability to fulfill requirements for promotion and tenure.  

Preferred Qualifications: Familiarity with instructional and multimedia hardware and software applications. Knowledge of emergent trends in academic librarianship. Familiarity with student retention initiatives in a university setting. Experience in providing research assistance to diverse constituencies. Prior library experience in an academic library setting.
