    The National Portrait Gallery was established as a bureau of the Smithsonian Institution in 1962 by an Act of Congress to collect, exhibit, and study portraits of "men and women who have made significant contributions to the history, development, and culture of the people of the U.S." With the exceptions of presidents of the U.S., portraits are not admitted until ten years after the demise of the subject. This edition contains color reproductions of acquisitions through December 31, 1979.
