Student Job Descriptions

The following are job descriptions for all student positions in the library. Please note that we are only hiring for the positions listed in the application.

Student Graphic Designer Produce high-quality flyers, social media posts, large-format files for print, and banners. Publications are occasionally needed on a rush basis.
Circulation Shelver - Bookstacks Library Circulation Shelvers are responsible for checking in, sorting, and shelving library materials while performing other tasks to maintain order and cleanliness of collections.
LC Reclass and ILS Conversion Student Assistant The LC Conversion and ILS Migration student assistant will assist the Chair, Continuing Resources Librarian and Continuing Resources Assistant performs a wide range of library tasks, primarily assisting the Library of Congress Classification project. Responsibilities include reclassing library materials from Dewey to LC, printing labels, affixing labels to materials, shelving materials in LC order, and other projects and tasks as assigned.
Circulation Desk Student Assistant Library Circulation Desk Assistants will provide basic customer service to faculty, staff, and patrons while assisting them with library materials.
Curriculum Graphic Design/Art Student The Curriculum Graphic Design Student will work under the supervision of the Curriculum manager to produce visual displays aligned with Tennessee K-12 instructional standards. Art work will be displayed on bulletin boards located in the Curriculum department as well as on the large glass wall facing the atrium at the entrance of the Curriculum department.
Curriculum Team Lead A Curriculum Team Lead is responsible for staffing the office when full-time staff is unavailable. A Team Lead must have a minimum of two (2) years of satisfactory work experience in Curriculum.
Curriculum Front Desk Assistant Curriculum Front Desk Assistants will provide basic customer service to faculty, staff, and patrons while maintaining accuracy of the shelved physical collection.
Curriculum Back Office Assistant Curriculum Back Office Assistants will primarily assist supervisors with processing materials. Student must have a minimum of one (1) semester of satisfactory work experience in Curriculum.
Digital Scholarship Assistant
Student Technology Assistant, Electronic Information Center and Reference Desk (ITD) Electronic Information Center (EIC) Student Technology Assistants (STAs) will provide advanced technical service to Walker Library, including, but not limited to: updating desktop software, performing printer maintenance, entering or updating technology work orders using Footprints, assisting patrons with variety of software, assisting patrons with school-related websites (MTSU, Pipeline, D2L, Walker Library), assisting patrons with student email accounts (Microsoft Office), guiding patrons through password changes, providing instruction to patrons using printers and copy machines, and maintaining operation of printers, desktops, scanners, and other equipment in the library. EIC STAs are required to fill out an STA application with the Information Technology Division (ITD), which is available on their website. (https://www.mtsu.edu/sta/application.php)
Student Technology Assistant, Library Public Technology Library Student Technology Assistants (STAs) will provide advanced technical service to Walker Library, including, but not limited to: updating desktop and laptop software, setting up equipment for reservable spaces and classrooms, performing printer maintenance, entering or updating technology work orders using Footprints, resetting community and alumni passwords using AD Manager, utilizing MakerGear printer, installing Microsoft Office onto patron’s machines using their email account, checking patrons in and out of reserved spaces, securing STA flash drives, clearing user accounts on public computers (NUCs), and setting up the portable public address (PA) system. In addition, the STA may be asked to perform the same duties as a Desk Assistant, including, but not limited to: checking out equipment to patrons, assisting patrons with variety of software, assisting patrons with school-related websites (MTSU, Pipeline, D2L, Walker Library), assisting patrons with student email accounts (Microsoft Office), guiding patrons through password changes, providing instruction to patrons using printers and copy machines, and printing specialized items including posters (2’x3’, 3’x4’, 3’x5’), resumes, and 11”x17” prints, and maintaining operation of printers, desktops, scanners, and other equipment in the library.
Library Public Technology Team Leader A Team Leader is responsible for staffing areas of Library Public Technology when full-time staff is unavailable or otherwise occupied. Team Leaders must have prior experience as a Student Technology Assistant.
Listening/Viewing Center Student Assistant Listening/Viewing Center Assistants will provide basic customer service to students, faculty, staff, and other patrons while maintaining accuracy of the shelved collection.
Reserves Assistant Reserves Assistants will provide basic customer service to faculty, staff, and patrons while maintaining orderliness of books in the Reserves collection and performing occasional clerical tasks.
Service Desk Assistant Service Desk Assistants will become knowledgeable with the various services offered by Walker Library in order to answer patron inquiries and direct patrons to the locations they need. Shifts available during all operating hours.
Web Developer Student Assistant Maintain and update library website content. Research, develope, and implement new technology that supports the needs of our users.
Library Reserves, Interlibrary Loan and Bookstacks (RIB) Student Assistant – Level 1 The RIB Assistant will provide basic customer service to faculty, staff, and patrons while maintaining orderliness of books in the Reserves, Interlibrary Loan (ILL) and Bookstacks collection.
Student Assistant, Circulation Desk Assistant – Level II Library Circulation Desk assistants will provide basic customer service to faculty, staff, and patrons while assisting them with library materials.
Student Assistant, Lv.II Special Collections Assistant Special Collections Assistants will provide basic customer service to faculty, staff, and patrons while working at the front desk on projects or routine tasks. Duties include but are not limited to greeting visitors and retrieving materials for users; answering questions related to Special Collections as well as questions about services offered by the library in a professional manner; re-shelving books and shelf reading; and providing support for processing and cataloging activities, exhibition installations and stack maintenance.
