Rutherford County History: Digital Collections

Visual documentation of the Commonwealth Fund Child Health Demonstration’s (CHD) study of children from Rutherford County, Tennessee, between 1924 and 1928.

This collection documents the history of people, land use, and nature in the Stones River Battlefield area. Of special interest are the history of the post-Civil War racialized landscape; the many ways in which the battle has been commemorated, from the construction of Hazen Monument in 1863 to the establishment and development of Stones River National Battlefield; and the increasing importance of the national park as a protected area for native species in a crowded urban environment.

This digital collection, a collaborative project of the Rutherford County Archives and the MTSU’s James E. Walker Library, includes photographs that document public health conditions and services in Rutherford County in the 1920s and 1930s, as well as Maud Ferguson’s account of the first public health nursing service in Rutherford County.
