Salo-Martinez-headshot

James E. Walker Library is pleased to introduce Shelly Salo Martinez as the new Student Engagement Librarian. If you’ve ever noticed signs in the Walker Library atrium for a Trivia Night or Career Workshop, then you have witnessed a cornerstone of the principles that guide us here in the library—Student Engagement! To enrich library services, our Student Engagement Librarian curates programs and events specific to the interests of the MTSU student community.

Coming to MTSU from Vanderbilt University, Shelly brings a blend of teaching and librarianship experience. After teaching elementary school for three years in Texas, Shelly obtained her Master of Science in Information Studies from the University of Texas at Austin in 2023.

With conference presentation topics such as “Reflective Teaching Practices” and “Beyond the Horizon: Navigating Instructional Feedback for Teaching Librarians,” Shelly’s research interests are evident—the role of librarians as educators. On what Shelly is most excited about in this position, she notes:

As a former classroom teacher, working directly with students has always been the most meaningful part of my work. I’m excited to bring that passion to the library in this new role focused on student engagement. I see the library not just as a place for academic support, but as a welcoming space for fostering community and belonging. The library is for everyone, and I want every student to feel that they have a place here. I’m especially looking forward to building on the great programming already in place while bringing in new ideas to connect with students in meaningful ways.

We are excited for all that Shelly Salo Martinez will bring to the MTSU student community. Keep an eye out for student-centered events throughout the year!
