Three faculty projects have been selected for Walker Library’s pilot round of Affordable Course Materials Grants.

Each of this year’s awardees will create, curate, or adapt open materials with a potential for a large impact at MTSU and beyond. The awarded projects have the potential to save approximately 4,400 MTSU students more than $440,000 annually. We received a high number of applications, showing faculty are committed to textbook affordability and student success.

The Affordable Course Materials Grant program is made possible through generous financial support from the Provost.

2024-2025 award recipients:

Harley Waters

Harley Waters (Department of Aerospace) will create an OER textbook for AERO 1010

Introduction to Aerospace. This course is taught every Fall and Spring semester and is the first aerospace course students in the major must take. The project aims to include multimedia elements such as text, video, and interactive assessments.

English Team

Dr. Kate Pantelides, Caroline LaPlue, and Nicholas Krause (Department of English) will collaborate to create a significantly revised 2nd edition of the current OER textbook for ENGL 1020

Research & Argumentative Writing. This is a high-enrollment, True Blue Core course that is offered every semester. The revised edition will include updated readings aligned with the new True Blue Core outcomes, a more accessible design, and an appendix detailing methods for sustainability.

Laura Collins

Laura Collins (Department of Geosciences) will create an OER lab manual for GEOL1031

Introduction to Earth Science, a high-enrollment, True Blue Core course offered every semester. It has the potential for long-term student savings and incorporates multiple contributors from the department.

About the Affordable Course Materials Grant Program

These small grants provide funding and hands-on support for faculty to adopt, adapt, or create zero-cost course materials for an existing or new course. Course materials may include textbooks as well as any other materials used for teaching, such as videos, slide decks, podcasts, or other supplementary materials. Program goals include reducing the costs of required course materials for MTSU students, encouraging and supporting the use of open educational resources by MTSU instructors, and empowering instructors to adopt, adapt, and create course materials that meet their pedagogical needs.
