State-sponsored research databases
Many states provide access to research datbases to their residents. The Tennessee site is TEL, the Tennessee Electronic Library.
Public library
The local public library may offer access to reseach databases. Don't forget books as a source of information!
Government Web sites
Government Web sites can be a great source of information, particularly for statistical information. Try limiting a search to .gov sites, or try USA.gov. FedStats is another directory to try.
