Using the Online Catalog

Use the following tips in the Advanced Search.

To search for a specific musical score, start by limiting the Format to Musical Score, then enter the title and composer's name in the search boxes. If you are searching for a symphony, concerto, or sonata, it will be helpful to add the opus or thematic catalog number.

If you're looking for a specific song or aria use a Title search. If you still have difficulty locating the piece, and you know that it's from a larger work, such as an opera or song cycle, try searching for that larger work.

An important distinction: If you are looking for items *by* a composer, the composer name goes in the "author" field. If you're looking for a book *about* a composer, the composer name goes in the "keyword" or "subject" field.

Also, there are a couple of important areas in the item record to check:

Location: Make sure you know the right location. The item could be at Walker Library on the third floor (music books), it could be on the 2nd floor (music scores), behind the circulation desk (CDs and videos), in the Listening/Viewing Center (LPs), or located at the Center for Popular Music.

Status: If an item is "available", it should be on the shelf. If it is checked out, the date due will be posted.
