The War of the Rebellion: A Compilation of the Official Records of the Union and Confederate Armies (973.73 Un3w 1971) The Official Records, or simply "OR", is unmatched in its coverage of the military aspects of the Civil War. One may want to consult A User's Guide to the Official Records of the American Civil War (973.7 Ai5u), which provides background information, notes about the weaknesses of the OR (e.g., poor indexing), as well as some helpful hints.

Civil War, 1861-1865 MFE 2991
Collection of pamphlets relative to the American Civil War. Sermons, personal narratives, speeches, public letters, poetry, music, campaign tracts are included in this collection of some 1758 titles on 2000 microfiche cards.

  • Compendium of the Confederate Armies Series (973.742 Si2c) This projected 11-volume set documents a total of 2,000 regimental histories. Each volume covers a state or group of states; the entry for each regiment includes organizational information, the name of the first commander and an alphabetical listing of field officers, a list of its battles and campaigns, and suggestions for further reading.

    A Compendium of the War of Rebellion (R973.7 D98c) This three volume set is Frederick H. Dyer's landmark study of the Union Army.

    The Civil War, 1861-1865 (MFE 2991) Sermons, Personal narratives, speeches, public letters, poetry, music, and campaign tracts are included in this collection of over 1700 titles.     Historical Information Relating to Military Posts and Other Installations ca. 1700-1900 MFM 217
    A reproduction of the 27-volume "Outline Index of Military Forts and Stations" which are a part of the Records of the Adjutant General's Office, 1780's-1917, Record Group 94, National Archives. Entry for each installation may vary from a line or two to several pages and may include any or all of the following information: when and by whom established and abandoned; geographic location; origin or derivation of its name; names of units stationed there and their period of assignment; history, geology, and plant life of the surrounding area; aspects of its legal title; and construction details. Usually included are bibliographic references to printed works and War Department Archives.

  • Regimental Histories of the American Civil War MFE 5322) This invaluable set provides biographical information about soldiers from a variety of sources: regimental rosters, honor rolls and casualty statistics, promotion and court martial documents, memoranda, home addresses of veterans, personal and family papers and recordss, diaries, biographical sketches, burial records, regimental reunion speeches, photographs, and maps.

    Reproductions of the application papers of cadets for appointment to the U.S. Military Academy, 1805-66. The unbound papers include letters from applicants requesting appointment, letters of recommendation, notifications from the War Department if the candidate was appointed, and letters of acceptance from the candidates. From originals in RG 94, Records of the Adjutant General's Office, in the National Archives.

    Assessment Lists of the U.S. Direct Tax Commission for the District of Tennessee, 1862 MFM 470
    "Assessments made under the Act of Congress entitled, 'An Act for the Collection of Direct Taxes in the insurrectionary districts, within the United States, and other purposes' approved June 7, 1862, and the act amendatory thereto." Arranged by name of county, then landowner. Gives number of acres, valuation, and taxes due. From originals in the National Archives.

  • Selected Records of the Tennessee Field Office of the Bureau of Refugees, Freedmen, and Abandoned Lands, 1865-1872 MFM 468
    These records include letters sent by the Assistant Commissioner, the Superintendent of Education, the Chief Medical Officer, and the General Claims Agent as well as office records and reports, leases for abandoned property, and labor contracts. Excellent source material for the period covered.

  • Southern Historical Society Papers 1876-1959 MFM 107
    52 volumes of source material on Civil War history told from the Confederate perspective. Includes information on battles and leaders, unit rosters, correspondence, personal recollections, official battle reports, and essays. Volume XV contains the "Appomattox Roster" of those who surrendered with Lee and volume XLIII consists of two long essays on General "Stonewall" Jackson. The last nine volumes are the proceedings of the Confederate Congress. An excellent index makes this set easily accessible.
